T The new and improved Nokia 3310.HMD GlobalBefore there wasiPhone, there was 3310. After its launch in 2000, Nokia sold more than 125 million models of its indestructible candybar, turningSnakeinto a cultural icon and searing that tinkling ringtone permanently into the back of your mind. If you didn’t own one, you probably knew someone who did. Andyou were probably jealous. It’s been almost 17 years since the 3310 first came out. In that time the Nokia brand has been bought, sold, and stripped for parts. At one point the 3310 even made a comeback, in the form of a wonky Windows Phone device with a huge camera bump that didn’t exactly excite the buying public. The company now making Nokia phones is HMD Global,a private equity-backedfirm created explicitly to make new Nokia phones. For their first act, the new owners set about restoring the 3310 to its former glory, while bringing the beloved old phone into the new era.Today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the company re-laun

11thFebruary celebrations in most areas in West Cameroon did not hold as planned by agents of the Francophone regime in Yaoundé. In places likeBali, Mamfe, Mundemba, Ndop and Muyuka, government activities were disrupted by angry youths sympathetic to the detained leaders of the Cameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortium.Southern Cameroonians in Bamenda, Buea, Kumbo, Tiko, Limbe, Kumba and Ekona respected calls for a massive civil disobedience campaign earlier announced by the interim leaders of the Consortium and demanded the immediate releaseof all Anglophone citizens from Francophone jails. In Mutengene, placards were waved informing Biya and his Francophone political elites that the reunification marriage was over. And in Buea, fighting broke out when prisoners who were brought out to swell the marching ranks disappeared andFrench Cameroonian citizens hired from Douala could not get complete payments from Mayor Ekema Patrick. The mayor dashed from behind his office and fle

CAMEROON:THE CASE FOR FEDERALISM

Image
Over the last two months, Cameroon has been going through a political crisis which, ifnot well attended to, could lead to the erosion of the country’s social cohesion. The Anglophoneminority has been calling for a federal system that will give greater political and economic powers to the regions. Some have been calling for a two-state federal system;with others clearly holding that a multi-region federation could help reduce corruption that results from central planning. There is however a third factor that is calling for outright secession based on the fact that an independent Southern Cameroons could put an end to the marginalization that Anglophones have witnessed over the last five decades. The government, for its part, holds that the centralized unitary system is a perfect system for the country as it has stood the test of time. While there is a flurry of political options, federalism – be it two-state or multi-region – seems to be attractive to many Cameroonians, including Fra

Consortium makes public conditions for dialogue with Archbishop Samuel Kleda

Image
The President of the Republic of Cameroon, Paul Biya addresses the youths today. The Consortium has received a tip-offthat he may acknowledge mistakes in the handling of our struggle. We are told the acknowledgement would not be sincere, but meant to fool us once more; a thing we should have become used to by now.Secondly, we have read from the French Language Daily- “Le Messager” that the President hasdesignated the Archbishop of Douala, His Grace Samuel Kleda as mediator in this struggle. We respect the man of God, who has demonstrated always that he is honest and has a personable character. But we must point out that in as much as we are ready for dialogue at any time, we abhor diversion.Let it be known that all those leaders the people of Southern Cameroons put their trust in to negotiate on their behalf are either in jail or on the run. They must be found and brought to pilot any negotiations that shall engage the responsibility of the people; no government appointee shall spea

ANGLOPHONE PROBLEM: BIYA FEELS MORE HIT FROM THE CONSORTIUM... AS IT GET MORE TOUGH

The interim leaders of theCameroon Anglophone Civil Society Consortiumhave dismissed reports over state radio and television calling off the strike.
