Camair-co set to launch flights to Bamenda after Bafoussam

–.Cameroon’s lone airliner, Camair-Co, will soon begin flights to Bamenda, North West Region, Transport Minister,   Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo’o has announced. The disclosure Friday October 14, came on the sidelines of the event marking Camair-Co’s maiden flight to Bafoussam airport.Witnessed by top government officials, the event in Bafoussam officially made the West regional headquarters, one of Camair-Co’s domestic destinations with Bamenda soon to be added to the grid.Cameroonians resident in the Region, according to the Cameroon’s Airlines Corporation, can now travel from Yaounde or Douala to Bafoussam and vice versa in 40 minutes at a cost of 30.000 FCAF.On Friday during the inaugural flight, Camair-Co’s MA 60 with four cabinet members onboardled by the Minister of Transport arrived the Bafoussam-Bamougoum airport at about 10:42 am from the Yaounde Nsimalen International airport.

The Bafoussam event, it should be said, actually marked the official beginning of Camair-Co’s domestic flights that are expected to be extended to all the other Regions in Cameroon.According to officials, Camai-Cro will fly to Bafoussam three times a week to include Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.Speaking during the Bafoussam inaugural flight event, Transport Minister re-echoed government’s determination to revamp Camair-Co that has for thepast years been a turbulent zone. The multi-billion company has been mired in several crises in recent years.

Taking the cue during the Bafoussam airport event, Camair-Co’s General Manager, Ernest Dikoum saluted government’s commitment to revamp the airliner. He corroborated the Minister by stating that Camair-Co’s next domestic destination shall be Bamenda. As part of its take-off plan, he said, the new management of Camair-Co has not only given priority to local flights but has also opened five regional destinations.Though both Mebe Ngo’o and Camair-Co’s GM did not give details as to whenthe company will begin flights to Bamenda, the move,The Cameroon Journallearnt, is already being saluted by a majority of North Westerners. The Bamenda airport, revitalized prior to the Head of State’s visit to theregional to preside over activities to mark the 50thAnniversary of the Cameroon Armed Forces, had since become an eyesore.

The airport situated on the outskirts of Bamenda near Bafut, we gathered, has suffered neglect with its infrastructure becoming dilapidated. With Camair-Co now set tobegin flights to Bamenda, it is highly expected that the airport will be given a facelift.  It is yet unclear how much it will cost clients to fly from Bamenda to Douala or Yaounde, but aviation experts say it would be within the neighbourhood of 35.000 FCFA.
